FAQ: Have a question? Ask here!

Kameloh
from the all-things-nabyn-related department

I'll be editing the faq soon so I would like to ask everyone if they have any questions for it! Just post your question here and I'll get to them as soon as possible. If we get enough questions then I might make this thread the new FAQ :)

#1. How can I join nabyn?
At the moment only users with invite codes can invite other people to the site. If you still want to join you can always try contacting me on my DA (though I'm very busy!) :)

#2. What is AP?
AP stands for Activity Points and it goes up whenever you browse Nabyn. It's just there to showcase how active you've been on the site.

#2-a. Can AP actually be saved up to get or achieve something?
At the moment, no. It's just there to display how active you are on the site. Maybe in the future we can make them useful :)

#3. Are there page/profile views?
There is actually two statistics for this: guest views and member views. They're both currently hidden at the moment and I'm trying to decide whether or not to display them!

#4. Do you have stats on my pictures like views/bookmarks?
Of course! You can view the stats at the bottom of the art viewer (right under the description). If you would like to see your overall statistics goto your Manage Content page and click on Artwork. It should display all view/bookmark/comment stats!

#5. Can we ever upload anything other than a GIF for an avatar?
At the moment no - I don't have a system where I can retroactively update all the avatars on all the comments/posts that you've made (DA has the server resources to do this, I do not). So at the moment while the site is small you can't.. sorry!

#6. What is considered NSFW? (by *swanda)
Anything that contains nudity, blood, violence or sexual themes.

#6-a. What is considered pornography and therefore unfit for Nabyn? (by *swanda)
Erected penises, open vaginas, interaction of a sexual kind and all other types of explicit sexual themes.

#7. How do I create a profile template?
Follow these steps:
a. goto your settings page and click on edit profile templates
b. enter a name for your new template and click on submit
c. from your settings page goto set profile template and set it to your new template
d. go back to edit profile templates and edit away!

#8 My profile page keeps redirecting to youtube - what should I do?
This only occurs if you inputted an invalid youtube video ID in your edit profile page. When youtube cannot find the video it redirects the whole page back to its main page. Make sure to use a correct video ID for your video :)
Example: The video ID for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4 would be QH2-TGUlwu4

#9 What are Sketchbooks?
The Nabyn sketchbooks are a place where you can post your sketches, wips, and studies in a forum-like environment. You can post up to 10 sketches per post at 10 posts per page! All the sketches are displayed at full view (if greater than 1000px, has a clickable image). It also comes with a gallery viewer so you can view all the sketches on one page.
The purpose of sketchbooks is to have a place where you can post anything without feeling pressure from picture views or bookmarks. It is there for your own self-improvement :)

#9-a Is NSFW allowed in sketchbooks?
Of course! You're allowed to post anything in your sketchbooks since it can be used for studies (ex: human body, nudity, etc). As long as it's not pornography it's alright with us!

#9-b Why isn't my sketchbook showing up on the front page? (by *soraroni)
In order for your sketchbook to appear on the front page, you must have a listing banner. Listing banners must be 250 by 50 pixels in size and be a png or jpg. You can add a listing banner to your sketchbook under the sketchbook settings in your sketchbook.

#9-c I have "watch sketches" selected on everyone I watch but I’m not updated when they submit to their sketchbooks. (by *swanda)
This feature apply to sketches added to peoples main gallery, it have nothing to do with sketchbooks.

#9-d How do I follow a sketchbook then? (by *swanda)
You go into the sketchbook you want to follow, and press the “Subscribe” text in the left side.

#9-e I still don’t get updates when people submit a new drawing to their sketchbook. (by *swanda)
You are not supposed to be getting updates when you subscribe to a user's sketchbook.
The subscription option is there for the sake of having a quick link reference to your favourite sketchbooks (ex: a subscribe button on a forum)
When subscribing to a sketchbook you can always see if it has been updated by going to the “Message Center” and go under the tab "Sketchbook subs".
A bold "(Updated)" sign will appear over the sketchbooks name if there are new sketches. It will also sort your subscribed sketchbooks based on when they were last updated.

#9-f It would be nice if we could bookmark drawings in the sketchbooks, will such a feature be added? (by *swanda)
No.
The sketchbooks are meant to be a pressure free environment where you don’t have to think about who watches and who bookmarks what.
If you want someone to be able to bookmark your sketches and doodles, add them to your gallery.
If you don’t want them to appear next to your finished art you can decide to upload them to your “Minor gallery” when you submit the drawing or when you edit an already submitted piece.

#10 What are bookmarks? (by *soraroni)
Bookmarks are just the same as the "favorites" you'd see on other sites.

#10-a If I bookmark an image, will it add a bookmark to my browser? (by *soraroni)
No, don't worry! Bookmaking an image will not affect your browser in any way. It is just the same as the favorites feature on other sites, where as it just adds them to your bookmarks section on-site.

#10-b I have bookmarked many drawings but for some reason they are not saved to my bookmarks, why is this? (by *swanda)
Are you sure you picked what folder to apply the bookmark to?
You have to push the bookmark button and then chose a folder to put it in. If you have not yet created a folder for this only a “General” folder will appear.

#11 What is the difference between friends and Follows? (by *soraroni)
The main difference between adding someone as a friend and adding someone as a normal follow, is that friends show up under your "friends" section on your profile. Either way you will still get updates on them! You will also notice a large difference under the Art by Friends/Following tab. Under this tab you can see art posted by either your friends or by your follows.

#12 How do I get invites, so that I can invite people to Nabyn? (by *soraroni)
When you are seen being active on the site, you will be given invitations periodically.

#12-a How can I tell if I have invites? (by *soraroni)
Invites will show up under the logout button in the top right of your Nabyn screen.

#12-b When I invite someone, am I responsible if they cause trouble? (by *soraroni)
Depending on the extent and severity of the trouble caused, you may be held responsible for having invited the person. This may result in having invitations removed or being put on a wait list.

#13 What's IP Lock?
IP Lock binds your last authenticated login with your IP address. If your account keeps logging off you can try logging in without IP Lock (for those who have changing IP addresses)

#14 How do you sort a drawing already submitted into folders? (by *swanda)
You go to “Manage Content” in upper right corner and under the first tab (Artwork) you press the “no folder” or folder name text, next to the drawing you want to sort. This will make a drop down menu appear; where you can choose the folder you want to apply the drawing to.

#15 Can you apply a drawing to more than one folder at a time? (by *swanda)
Not at the given time, no.

#16 How can I change my username? (by *swanda)
At given time the only way to get a name change is to ask Kameloh for it.
Don’t be afraid to ask him, he won’t bite ;)

#17 I’m having a problem with the site, how do I report it? (by *swanda)
In the very bottom of Nabyns right corner there is a “Report an Error” function.
Use that or make a post in this part or the forum http://www.nabyn.com/forum_cat.php?id=3

#18 Can you please allow sculptures, literature and other such things on Nabyn? (by *swanda)
As it is now Nabyn is meant to be a place for people who draw and paint.
We feel that it is important to focus on as few things as possible to keep the site from being overpopulated and split into too many separate groups.
It is not because we dislike other art forms, we just feel that Nabyn should be a place for those who draw and paint only.

#19 What is considered General Image Rating? (by *swanda)
General are things suitable for all ages.

Um, hello!

If you don't mind... how do we put images into different folders? I can only find how to move it between the main gallery and the "minor art" tab.
Thank you~ :)

Kameloh
I forgot to update that in the manage artwork section! I'll be doing it this week :)

Thank you!

And thank you for all of your hard work. :3

Minor question:

When uploading icons/avatars... do you ever plan to increasing the 10KB limit?

I know it must be hard on the server but some icons that people have made before on dA/other sites are a tad too big.

MrNarwhal
I hate to be 'THAT GUY', but is there going to be an established policy on the submission of pornographic and extremely graphic and gorey material?

I see there's an NSFW filter, but I'm not sure the extent it covers.

Splattered
@MrNarwhal: From what I know of, pornographic material of any sort is not accepted here.
» Terms of Service said:
- Artistic nudity is allowed. Pornography is not.

I don't know about the submission of the gory stuff, though.
ur frickin dumb

You know when you select what programs you use when you upload a new art work, you should add these programs:

Terragen 2, Google Sketchup 8, Thea Studio, Kerkythea 2008, Apophysis 2.02 and Indigo render. Because I use them all.
Long live the High Tyto and the Tytonic Union of Pure Ones!

Yeshul
@MrNarwhal: Gory art tends to be a gray area from what I've seen, it's either you can stand it or you can't. Knowing Kameloh and Freya though, I don't think they'd object to the idea of having gore in art pieces. Personally I think it can be allowed if the user's intentions are for art, and not for the sake of just giving "GORE GORE GORE" to the viewers. If it enhances the art, or allows an artist to display the meaning in the piece, then in my opinion by all means use it. But with the diverse age group we have on Nabyn, there comes the issues of parental ratings and what not. I'll ask Kameloh or Freya when I get the chance.

Would you consider getting an official chatroom? Right now people are using the shoutbox as one, but its just not good as one. Maybe an IRC channel or something? Even just a Tinychat would be nice.

alienfirst
Haha! I totally was wondering how to put images in different folders after uploading, and I'm glad I checked this thread before asking a question that was already answered!

Stickers
this may sound dumb but, i've heard a lot of people are getting invited for registrations here? I was kinda confused when i heard this, so what's up with that?

rustrot
I don't need this answered anymore but adding what AP is to the FAQ would be a good idea.

Yeshul
@Stickers: When Nabyn became open beta there was a sudden and large influx if members, and if we left the registrations open it would've stressed the server. Basically open registration was closed, and invitations are what we use to get more members for open beta. It's only temporary right now until Nabyn get's a better server, so basically members can send invitations to Nabyn to allow others to register. It helps prevent a mass registration, while still allowing room for people to join.
