Cope was born a genius. From the start he has been fascinated by science especially Physics and Astronomy. He is a true nerd and a dreamer too coming up with all kinds of ideas in his head some of which become his amazing inventions. His parents supported him and encouraged his passion for learning. Cope has a speech impediment. He stutters badly when he speaks and it becomes worse if he is excited or upset. Consonants at the start of words and double vowels in the center of words trip him up. But it was never a problem for him until later in his school years.

During elementary a new kid named Owen Marsh joined his school part way through the year. The boy was a year younger and as brilliant as Cope. Cope could never relate to his class mates because he was so far ahead of them and in some senses was more like an adult. He hoped that at last Owen would be the friend he had been searching for. Someone with common ground to talk to and share all his ideas with. Cope was completely wrong. When Cope extended the hand of friendship Owen rejected it and hated him from the start.

Owen made fun of his bad color coordination, his thick glasses, how ugly Cope was, how he couldn't speak right and how stupid he was. Cope had never encountered anything like this before and his insecurities began to surface. He avoided Owen as much as was possible through his school life.

After graduating in the early 90's Cope was accepted into Yale University where he majored in physics. He was particularly interested in optics and electromagnetism. He had one year of peace there until Owen Marsh was also accepted. Luckily for Cope he majored in chemistry and the two didn't have too many classes together. That same year Caroline Morgan joined Yale. She was double majoring in biology and physics. The three had over lapping classes and both Owen and Cope fell for her. Caroline fell in love with Cope and the two were married right before they graduated.

Cope eventually took on a job as a college professor teaching his favorite subject physics. A few years later Maximillian Cope was born. Cope's brilliance eventually caught the eye of Jerone Thanatos and he was asked to join Thanatos Industries. Cope was thrilled at the prospect to make more money for his family and to work with real funding for his inventions. The draw back was that after thirteen years of peace once again he ran into Dr. Owen Marsh who was now his supervisor.

Some of Jonathan Cope's personal inventions include a "death ray" which is actually a portable particle accelerator. Jet shoes. A hover bike. And his favorite the flying car.

Cope speaks English and knows American Sign Language. He decided to learn that as his second language in college because not only was his stuttering becoming a problem but when he gets upset he loses his voice and can't talk at all. If the person he it talking to or arguing with doesn't know sign language Cope carries around a tiny laptop that he types on really quickly and speaks what he writes for just such occasions.

Like Owen Marsh, Cope is also a speed reader and has an eidetic memory.
Cope doesn't like his first name. He dislikes being called John more than Johnathan. He likes being called Cope since that's what he was referred to all through school. But he does have a personal quote that he says to those he's slightly closer too and it is also a test to see if they are worth knowing his "real name".

Personal Quote: "Don't call me by the first part of my first name. Call me by the second part of my first name."

If one figures out that means Nathan then he'll be very happy with them.
