i also didn't know that about cannibas but i suppose it makes sense. you legalize alcohol, you still need to make SOMETHING illegal to keep all the feds on the drug squad employed and tell kids to stay away from it or something.
it also explains why prior to the early 1930s there were almost no anti-marijuana propaganda films (with the exception of "high on the range" which i sometimes doubt the legitimacy of) but then suddenly there was a regular explosion of them!
anti-drug propaganda film making had only just found its feet with the 1931 anti-alcohol silent "ten nights in a bar room"! you can't back the industry down from something like that

...High on the Range? How have I never seen this? Legit or not, it sounds hilarious.
I'll always remember MST3K's incredible treatment of Reefer Madness, though. That was what made me first notice anti-drug films of the era.

it's a silent! let me dig it out.

a film nerd could probably help decide if it's legit or not, but sadly, i am not a true film nerd. i can't date things in film very well. though i do know close-up shots weren't being used until relatively late in the game.

i'd like to know if it's for real or if it's even part of a larger film that perhaps someone chopped up to make LOOK like propaganda!

Same here! It could be either, to be honest...I can't tell.
